Herman William Koch was elected to the position of Director of the American Institute of Physics in 1966, serving as the fourth director of AIP since it's founding in 1931.
Koch was born on September 28, 1920 in New York City. He completed his undergraduate education at Queens College in New York City, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1941. He went on to earn his Master of Science and doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois in 1942 and 1944, respectively. Koch began his professional career as an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois (1944-1949), followed by many years as Chief at the High Energy Radiation Section of the National Bureau of Standards (1949-1962). In 1962 he became Chief of the Division of Radiation Physics of the National Bureau of Standards, a position that he held until 1966. Koch is also a member of many committees and societies, including the American Physical Society, National Committee on Radiation Protection, and Phi Kappa Phi.
